GL-LS-8

GL-LS-8

The Glow Lamp Lab Sample 8, or in short GL-LS-8, is one out of several glow lab experiments concerning colon tubes. She has been made out of 9mm soda lime tubing, Dumet wire for the pinch seal, nickel sheet for the cathodes and stainless steel wire for the anode; the atmosphere is air at 15mbar:

GL-LS-8

The GL-LS-8 closely resembles the GL-LS-7; but her construction will be shown here as well:

First of all, using a standard hole puncher, two circular pieces of nickel sheet were obtained; these were then connected by a glazed Dumet wire. The stainless steel anode was connected to a glazed Dumet wire as well:

The construction of the GL-LS-8

This construction - which was intended to be the glowing cathode in shape of two glowing dots - was joined to the stainless steel anode construction using a few drops of glass:

Finally, the whole construction could be placed in pre-thinned 9mm tubing:

The pinch seal as well as the vacuum seal-off were a full success:

Sadly, one of the wires broke loose close to the pinch seal; however, there is still electrical contact to the interior of the GL-LS-8.

Unfortunately, the dots are internally wired in parallel; as can be read in the GL-LS-7 article this practically prohibits simultaneous glowing of the two dots. But I managed to have the two dots glow separately:

Here you can see the glowing GL-LS-8 from the side:

All in all the GL-LS-8 is a very satisfactory result because on the one hand she is partly functional, but on the other hands she provides valuable insights on how the internal construction of the next colon tubes has to be improved.
