HB-106

Haydu Bulletin No. 3, 1955

Haydu Bulletin No. 3, 1955

HB-106

The HB-106 from the American manufacturer Burroughs is a standard top-view Nixie tube with a digit-height of 15.5mm:

The prefix HB is interesting, indicating a relation to Burroughs:

The HB-106 is one of the oldest Nixie tubes (except for the GI-series from National Union, i.e. GI-10 and GI-21). The prefix HB dates back to the first Nixie tubes from Burroughs, who had just bought Hadyu Brothers, a small laboratory by the two brothers Haydu, who dmanufactured the first Nixie tubes there. During the first time of Nixie tube production, the tubes thus had the prefix HB.

The HB-106 is an early Nixie tube, you can realise that by taking a closer look at the internal construction:

The wiring is somewhat untypical for Burroughs Nixie tubes, as is the missing plate the whole construction is usually mounted on.

The anode contruction is interesting, too, because next to the actual anode mesh another auxiliary 8-shaped anode is stacked into the middle of the tube; these two anode parts are connected by a small wire that you can clearly see in the upper left picture on the left side within the glas bulb.

This is the Haydu Brothers bulletin no. 3 from 1955, presenting the HB-106:

Haydu Bulletin No. 3, 1955

At this time, Burroughs had already bought Haydu Brothers, indicated by the ominous Subsidiary of Burroughs Corporation on the front page of the bulletin. Here is the page covering the HB-106:

Logically, Nixie is not yet marked as a registered trademark (®), as Burroughs registered Nixie as their trademark in 1956.

There are no technical specifications in this bulletin, indicating that the HB-106 was probably still rather new on the market at the time this bulletin was issued.

Unfortunately, I do not have any datasheet for the HB-106. If someone can provide me with a datasheet, please email me.
